BIG BUN MI

The design process of creating a mock restaurant’s responsive website

Background

Inspired by the vibrant street markets of Vietnam, Big Bun Mi brings fast-casual banh mi with a modern fusion twist. They pride themselves on offering sandwiches of excellent quality to deliver an authentic, flavorful, and healthy menu.

I lead the web design strategy, which included research, competitive analysis, ideation, sketching, prototyping, testing, and evaluation.

Restaurant Concept

Located in the bustling city of Washington DC and near George Washington University, Big Bun Mi opens from 12pm-4am. Food and drinks will include two options:

  • Just Heo Grillin'

  • Veganese

    • white baguette, edamame pate, vietnamese vegan mayo, lemongrass tofu, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, lettuce, cilantro

Design Question

How might we improve the online experience of a customer selecting a meal to be delivered or pickup?

The primary problem that the website addressed was the customer’s wait time between ordering a meal in a restaurant and waiting to be served. Implementing a feature that allows users to order meals beforehand with real-time status updates means eliminating wait time, improving customer satisfaction, and boosting revenue.

Target Audience

There are three groups of users with different needs:

Design Criteria

The website needs to enable the user to:

  • Find out if the restaurant delivers to their area

  • Order food online

  • Cost of food

  • Contact the restaurant

  • Find out when the restaurant opens

The website needs to enable the client to:

  • To sell food online that will be delivered

  • Provide a system for order customization

  • To increase sales

  • Communicate affordability

  • Explain Vietnamese street food and communicate fast service

Competitive Audit

I conducted a competitive audit by looking at websites of other food delivery companies and sandwich shops, and what they offer to visitors. The following are key insights:

  • Delivery platforms should offer information about the nutritional content of their food, especially when catering to college students. Gen Zers are fueling plant-based and meatless food purchases—a market expected to reach $35.5 billion by 2027.

  • 60 percent of 18-24-year-olds will hang up the phone if a business doesn’t answer right away.

Sitemap

I began planning the information architecture of the website. I opted for a simple hierarchical structure that showed distinct sections where specific information can be found on the website. The main webpages are:

  • Home

  • Start Order/Menu

  • Pay a Visit

  • Our Story

  • Careers

  • Contact

Functionality requirements include:

  • Select from favorites

  • Create customized banh mi sandwiches

    • Bread

    • Base

    • Protein

    • Topping

  • Check out

    • Enter address and contact info

    • Enter payment info

  • Shopping cart

  • Order history

  • Contact form

  • Repeat order

  • See real-time status

Having finalized my information architecture, I was able to develop a sitemap.
