VOICE OF AMERICA

AFTER PARKLAND

Voice of America is an international news and broadcast organization with programs in over 40 languages.  Established in 1947, the organization is the largest international U.S broadcaster with an estimated global audience of 275 million. The multimedia agency provides news, radio programs, service, and cultural programming.

"After Parkland" is a documentary produced by Voice of America that tells the story of two families -- the Alhadeffs and the Schentrups — and how they're speaking out after the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting.

ROLE: Videograher, Assistant Producer

THE PROCESS

As the documentary intern, I worked directly with Executive Producer, Beth Mendelson to help produce original documentaries that tell authentic stories at the heart of humanity and international affairs.

From pitching story ideas to logging footage, I supported the overall department with multimedia production efforts. Other duties included; research for stories and profiles; organizing footage; collecting b-roll footage; editing video; logging; transcription; and briefing members on gun control legislation. One of my proudest accomplishments was securing a lead interview with Philip Schentrup, the father of Carmen Schentrup, one of the 17 people killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre.

Producing requires a great deal of preparation, planning, passion, and persistence. I was involved in every creative. technical, and administrative aspect of the project and learned the true value of being prepared (and how to bounce back from missteps). I gained exposure to journalistic practices while also acquiring experience in the production process.
